This chromolithograph shows Philip Henry Sheridan's famous ride on October 19, 1864, when he galloped from Winchester, Virginia, to the battlefield at Cedar Creek after his army had been driven back that morning. His arrival rallied the retreating Union troops, and they turned the battle into a victory. Thure de Thulstrup, a Swedish-born artist known for military subjects, designed the image, and the Boston firm L. Prang & Co. produced it as a color print in the 1880s, when the ride had become a popular Civil War story.
