Fort Fisher, the Confederate stronghold guarding the mouth of the Cape Fear River near Wilmington, North Carolina, fell to Union forces in January 1865 after a naval bombardment and a land assault. Its capture closed Wilmington, the last major Confederate port still open to blockade runners, and cut off a vital supply route. This chromolithograph, published by L. Prang & Co. of Boston around 1887, reproduces a painting by J.O. Davidson. The process layered several colored stones to imitate oil on canvas, bringing scenes of the war into homes and schools.
