Fort Fisher, the earthwork stronghold guarding the mouth of the Cape Fear River in North Carolina, is the subject of this color print, published in Chicago by Kurz & Allison in 1890. The fort mattered because it protected Wilmington, the last major Confederate port still open to blockade runners. Union naval and army forces under Admiral David D. Porter and General Alfred H. Terry captured it in January 1865 after a heavy bombardment and assault, which closed that supply route. Issued a quarter century after the war, chromolithographs like this one catered to veterans and a public that wanted dramatic battle scenes.
