The attack on Fort Sanders, an earthwork on the western edge of Knoxville, Tennessee, ended in a Confederate defeat on November 29, 1863. Troops under James Longstreet tried to storm the fort across a ditch and through wire entanglements, and Union defenders beat them back with heavy fire. This chromolithograph was published in Chicago by Kurz & Allison in 1891, nearly three decades after the fighting, when color prints of Civil War battles were popular in American homes. It shows how the war was remembered in the late nineteenth century, when the clash was often recalled as a stubborn Union stand.
