The title points to Battery Wagner, an earthwork on Morris Island guarding the approach to Charleston Harbor. Union forces launched a frontal assault on it on July 18, 1863, and the attack is remembered largely for the 54th Massachusetts, one of the first Black regiments raised in the North, which led the charge and suffered heavy losses, including its colonel, Robert Gould Shaw. The record dates this print to about 1890, decades after the fighting, and links it to the Chicago firm Kurz & Allison, which produced many popular color prints of Civil War scenes for veterans and home buyers. The date and attribution are noted as unverified, so the print is best read as a later commemorative image of the battle rather than a record made on the field.
