Robert E. Lee is the subject here, shown in a lithograph published by Currier & Ives, the New York firm that turned out inexpensive prints of famous people, battles and everyday life for a mass market. The record places the print sometime between 1860 and 1870, so it was made either just before or during the Civil War, when Lee moved from a respected U.S. Army officer to commander of the Confederate forces in Virginia. Currier & Ives sold such portraits widely, which means a print like this reflects how Lee was presented to a public following the war's events closely, whatever their loyalties.
