Lee died at his home in Lexington, Virginia, on October 12, 1870, five years after the surrender at Appomattox, and this Currier & Ives lithograph was issued the same year to mark his passing. Lee had spent his last years as president of Washington College, which he helped steer toward recovery after the war, and the print's title records his age at death, 62 years, 8 months and 6 days. Currier & Ives sold such memorial prints to a wide public, so the image reflects how northern and southern audiences alike turned Lee into a figure of national mourning and reconciliation.
