Ulysses S. Grant died at Mount McGregor in Saratoga County, New York, on July 23, 1885, and this lithograph treats that death as a national event. Grant had been suffering from throat cancer and had raced to finish his memoirs so his family would be provided for, completing them only days before he died. Published in New York under the name of N. Currier, the print belongs to the mass-market output of Currier & Ives, whose inexpensive lithographs carried news and sentiment into households across the country.
