Currier & Ives issued this c1867 lithograph of Ulysses S. Grant with his wife Julia and their children, a domestic portrait at a moment when the general was among the most famous men in the country. Grant had led Union armies to victory in the Civil War and would soon become a political figure, and popular printmakers like Currier & Ives turned such celebrated figures into affordable images for middle-class parlors. The print presents Grant as a devoted family man as much as a soldier, a deliberate choice that helped shape his public image. It is catalogued in the Gale Research raisonné of the firm's work, which makes it a useful reference for historians of nineteenth-century popular prints.
