Grant's visit to Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois, is the detail that sets this lithograph apart from other Currier & Ives portraits of the general. Lincoln was buried there in 1865, but his permanent tomb was not completed until 1874, so the scene shows a cemetery still awaiting its final monument. Published around 1868, the print appeared during the years when Grant, the Union army's commanding general, was becoming a national political figure and was soon to be elected president. Images that pair him with Lincoln's grave reflected how closely the public linked the two men's wartime legacies.
