Issued by the New York firm of Currier & Ives around 1860, this lithograph presents Abraham Lincoln as the Republican candidate for president, a role his party gave him at its Chicago convention that May. Inexpensive prints like this were a common way for campaigns to reach voters, and Currier & Ives produced many portraits of candidates for wide sale. Lincoln's victory in the November election made him the sixteenth president, so the print captures him just before his election set the country on the path to the Civil War.
