Hannibal Hamlin, a Maine politician, is the figure this lithograph puts front and center, and the print presents him as the Republican running mate on the 1860 ticket headed by Abraham Lincoln. Published by Currier & Ives in New York around 1860, it belongs to the campaign portraiture the firm produced in large numbers during that election year, when printed likenesses of candidates circulated widely as cheap, collectible images. Hamlin, a former Democrat who had served as a senator from Maine, was chosen to balance the Republican ticket, and his portrait reflects the party's effort to introduce its candidates to voters across the North.
