Currier & Ives issued this 1861 lithograph of Abraham Lincoln soon after he took office as the sixteenth president, at a moment when the country was dividing toward war. Printed in New York, the sheet is one of the many inexpensive portraits the firm sold to a public eager to see the new president's face. Its catalog entry in the Gale Research raisonné of the firm's work places it among the early political images the company produced around the 1860 election and the months that followed. Lithographs like this one were widely hung in homes and shops, so they tell us as much about how Lincoln was presented to ordinary Americans as about the man himself.
