This Currier & Ives lithograph shows Abraham Lincoln, drawn from a photograph by Mathew Brady, and it was issued in New York in 1860. Brady's studio portrait was made in New York in early 1860, when Lincoln was known nationally mainly through his debates with Stephen Douglas and his speech at Cooper Union. Printmakers like Currier & Ives turned photographs such as this into inexpensive images that families could hang on the wall. The title's claim that Lincoln was "our next president" reflects the campaign mood of that year, before he won the presidency in November.
