Few campaign images from 1860 introduce their subject as plainly as this lithograph, which calls Abraham Lincoln "our next president" before the election had taken place. Published in New York by Currier & Ives, a firm that sold inexpensive prints to a broad public, it helped voters put a face to an Illinois lawyer whose Republican nomination that spring had surprised many observers. Prints like this were often hung in homes and displayed at rallies, so the sheet offers a glimpse of how political loyalty was shown in ordinary households on the eve of the Civil War.
