The caption on this glass negative names Robert E. Lee, the Confederate general who commanded the Army of Northern Virginia and surrendered at Appomattox Court House in April 1865. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption cards written by the Bain News Service, so the sitter's identity is not independently confirmed. The agency, founded in New York in 1899, supplied news pictures to newspapers for decades and often reproduced older portraits, so this image may be a copy of an earlier photograph rather than a new sitting.
