The Currier & Ives lithograph of the Battle of Cedar Mountain, fought on August 9, 1862, in Culpeper County, Virginia, shows a fight that pitted Union forces under Maj. Gen. Nathaniel Banks, part of John Pope's Army of Virginia, against Confederates under Stonewall Jackson. The printed caption credits the Federal line with holding the field after the Rebels were driven back, though the battle was a tactical close call that ended in a Union withdrawal the next day. Published by a New York firm that sold inexpensive color prints to a wide public, the picture reflects how northern audiences wanted the war's engagements presented to them.
