The caption on this 1889 color lithograph sets it apart by naming the specific units engaged: Geary's Division of the 12th Corps, the 4th and 14th Corps of the Army of the Cumberland, and the 11th and 15th Corps of the Army of the Tennessee. The fighting took place on November 24, 1863, on the steep slopes of Lookout Mountain above Chattanooga, where Union troops climbed through fog and cloud cover to dislodge Confederate forces. Chicago publisher Kurz & Allison issued many such chromolithographs in the 1880s and 1890s, aimed at veterans and families who wanted vivid, dramatic views of the war's major battles.
