Fought November 23 to 25, 1863, the Battle of Missionary Ridge took place just east of Chattanooga, Tennessee, where Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant broke Confederate lines after the fighting at Lookout Mountain. This color lithograph was issued in 1886 by Kurz & Allison, a Chicago firm that produced many popular chromolithographs of Civil War battles for a public still eager to revisit the conflict over two decades after Appomattox. Its vivid, crowded scene reflects how the war was remembered in print at the time, with dramatic action that often emphasized heroism over precise tactical detail.
