Its title names the Battle of Missionary Ridge, the Union assault in November 1863 that broke Confederate lines near Chattanooga, Tennessee, though the subject headings also list Gettysburg, so the scene may be a general Civil War battle rather than a single site. The print is a chromolithograph advertisement from about 1886 by the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company, which used colorful cards like this to promote its reapers and mowers to farmers. Its subject headings also tie it to 1860s harvesting machinery, a reminder that the company marketed its machines in the years after the war by linking them to the nation's memory of that conflict.
