Drawn around the time of the fighting, this sheet centers on Union cavalry officer August V. Kautz and the 2nd Ohio Cavalry, with artillery, soldiers and wagons packed into a narrow strip of paper. The Battle of Darbytown Road, fought on October 7, 1864, was one of several clashes east of Richmond during the long Union campaign against the Confederate capital and the Petersburg lines. The drawing combines pencil, Chinese white and black ink wash on pink-tan paper, a mix that suits quick sketches and gives the scene a soft, hazy tone. The wagons beside the guns are worth noticing, since moving supplies and ammunition mattered as much to the campaign as the fighting itself.
