The battle at Darbytown Road, Virginia, is the subject of this pencil and ink wash drawing on light green paper, which shows Union soldiers and officers with rifles. The fighting took place in early October 1864, during the long Richmond-Petersburg campaign, when Union and Confederate forces struggled over roads east and south of Richmond. Drawings like this one, made in the field or from reports, were a common way for the public to see scenes that photographers of the period rarely captured, especially the combat itself.
