The drawing shows Col. Ambrose E. Burnside's brigade at Bull Run, the July 21, 1861 engagement that became known as the First Battle of Bull Run, or First Manassas. Its pencil, Chinese white, and black ink wash on green paper give it a sketchy, working look. Burnside's command included the 1st and 2nd Rhode Island and the 71st New York regiments, and it fought on the Union left. The battle was one of the first large clashes of the war, and its outcome, a Union retreat toward Washington, shaped the early expectations of a short conflict.
