Resaca, Georgia, was the site of a four-day fight from May 13 to 16, 1864, during William T. Sherman's advance toward Atlanta. Neither side won a decisive victory there, and the Confederate army under Joseph E. Johnston eventually pulled back south. This color lithograph was published in 1889, about a quarter century after the battle, by Kurz & Allison of Chicago, a firm known for turning Civil War scenes into popular color prints. Its late date means it reflects how veterans and the public remembered the war by then, not an eyewitness view of the fighting.
