Pencil drawing dated September 17, 1862, shows the charge across Burnside Bridge, the stone span over Antietam Creek near Sharpsburg, Maryland. The bridge was the scene of a costly Union assault that afternoon, when troops under Ambrose Burnside pushed across against Confederate defenders posted on the far bank. The fighting there was part of the Battle of Antietam, which remains the bloodiest single day in American military history. The sheet came to the Library of Congress as a gift from J.P. Morgan in 1919 and belongs to its Civil War drawing collection.
