The Battle of Antietam, fought near Sharpsburg, Maryland, on September 16 and 17, 1862, remains the bloodiest single day in American military history. Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia had carried the war north after its victories in Virginia, and Union forces under Gen. George B. McClellan met it along Antietam Creek. The fighting was fierce and the casualties heavy on both sides, and the result was tactically inconclusive, but Lee withdrew to Virginia, giving President Abraham Lincoln the opening he needed to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.
