Few subjects from the Civil War are as recognizable as the stone span over Antietam Creek, and this pencil drawing records the moment of the assault on it. On September 17, 1862, Union troops under Ambrose Burnside pushed across the narrow bridge in the afternoon, with Confederate defenders firing from the bluffs above. The fighting there was part of the Battle of Antietam near Sharpsburg, Maryland, which remains the bloodiest single day in American military history. The sketch, by E. Forbes, is one of the Civil War drawings the Library of Congress received as a gift from J.P. Morgan in 1919.
