The bridge at the center of this view is the stone span over Antietam Creek near Sharpsburg, Maryland, which the Union IX Corps under Ambrose Burnside stormed on September 17, 1862. Confederate troops, including a Georgia brigade under Robert Toombs, held the high ground above the crossing, and the Union attack took much of the afternoon to force through. The name Burnside Bridge stuck afterward, and the battle made the bridge one of the most recognized spots in the war's photographs. Look at the mill buildings beside the creek, which show how the valley's industry continued in the middle of the fighting.
