Troops cooking supper across the open fields, while a column marches off the road and over a distant hill, give this drawing its quiet mood at the end of a day's march. Edwin Forbes made it as one of the plates for *Life Studies of the Great Army*, a series published in 1876 that drew on the sketches he had made in the field with the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War. Forbes was drawn to the ordinary routines of soldiering, such as marching and camp life, more than to battle, and the pencil and opaque white here capture the settling of a bivouac at dusk.
