Richmond, the Confederate capital, fell on the night of April 2, 1865, and this hand-colored lithograph from Currier & Ives depicts that night. Confederate authorities left the city after Union forces broke the defenses at Petersburg, and supplies and warehouses were set on fire to keep them from falling into Union hands. The flames spread through parts of the city overnight, and Union troops entered the next morning. Currier & Ives, a New York firm, sold affordable prints like this to a public eager for images of the war's major events.
