The title names Maj. Gen. John F. Reynolds, commander of the Union I Corps, who was shot and killed early on July 1, 1863, as his troops moved into position west of Gettysburg. His death was a serious blow to the Army of the Potomac, which lost one of its most trusted corps leaders on the first morning of the battle. Images of his fall were later used to mark the moment as a symbol of sacrifice for the Union cause.
