Pencil and Chinese white on a small sheet of olive paper give this drawing its character, and its title places it among the Union sharpshooters of the 18th Corps during the Petersburg siege in July 1864. By that summer the lines around Petersburg, Virginia, had settled into trench warfare, and marksmen who could fire on exposed enemy soldiers from concealed positions were a steady presence in the fighting. The subject headings also name Gouverneur K. Warren, the Union general whose corps served at Petersburg that year. Field sketches like this one, made close to the front, offer a different view of trench life than many photographs of the period.
