Snowball fights were a common diversion in the winter camps around Dalton, Georgia, where the Confederate Army of Tennessee spent much of the cold season of 1863 and 1864. This drawing, dated March 22, 1864, shows officers and flags in the middle of a snowball battle, a reminder that soldiers waiting out a long winter still found room for play. Made with pencil, Chinese white, and black ink wash on gray paper, it captures a lighter side of camp life that rarely appears in official records. Dalton soon became the staging point for the spring campaign toward Atlanta.
