Brother Jonathan, an older personification of the United States, is the figure at the center of this lithograph, and the record also ties the scene to the U.S. Capitol, which places the march in Washington. The title, "Yankee Volunteers Marching into Dixie," plays on the popular tune "Dixie," which had circulated widely in both North and South before the war. Printed in Boston and issued from Washington, the sheet was deposited for copyright in January 1862, when Union volunteer regiments were still forming. Its sheet-music classification suggests it was meant to sell alongside a song, a common way patriotic imagery reached middle-class parlors.
