Set indoors, this lithograph takes its title, *Home again*, from the homecoming it portrays, a soldier returning to domestic life. Trevor McClurg painted the original, and Fabronius reproduced it as a lithograph for the New York firm Endicott & Co., which printed it around 1866, the year after the Civil War ended and when Union troops were being mustered out. The caption notes that it was copied from a painting owned by James Parke Jr., a reminder that sentimental scenes like this were widely reproduced so that families could buy affordable images of reunion. Its interior and soldier subjects make it a useful record of how postwar America imagined the return home.
