Titled "Fate of the Rebel Flag," this 1861 color lithograph takes its subject from the Confederate banner, which had only recently been adopted when the print appeared that year. The record credits the painting to William Bauly, with the stone work done by the New York firm Sarony, Major & Knapp, and the print was published by William Schaus. Its copyright deposit impression bears a November 15 stamp from the State Department, a reminder that prints of this kind circulated as wartime commentary on the secession crisis and the young Confederacy's prospects.
