A color lithograph measuring nearly 58 by 69 centimeters, this print reproduces a painting by William Winner of a flag going up in May 1861, only weeks after the attack on Fort Sumter had led many Northern communities to display the Union colors. Engraver L. N. Rosenthal worked from the original canvas, and Philadelphia publisher Charles Desilver issued the finished print around 1864, when patriotic imagery was in steady demand. Historians of American political prints list it under that year, making it a useful record of how wartime loyalty reached home walls.
