The bridge in this view spans the Ohio River at Cincinnati, where a line of floating pontoons carried troops, wagons and supplies between the Ohio shore and Kentucky during the Civil War. The image was sketched by A.E. Mathews of the 31st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, so it reflects a soldier's firsthand look at the river crossing, and it was printed as a lithograph by Middleton, Strobridge & Co. of Cincinnati. Its date is uncertain and is given in the record only as sometime between 1861 and 1865. Such prints were popular with readers who wanted to see the war's logistics, not just its battlefields.
