Few Civil War sketches name their subject as precisely as this pencil study, which identifies William J. Jackson, sergeant major of the 12th New York Volunteers, on guard at Stoneman's Switch near Fredericksburg, Virginia, on January 27, 1863. That winter the Army of the Potomac was encamped across the Rappahannock from Fredericksburg, and the drawing dates to just days after the army's failed Mud March. Made from life in camp, the sketch captures a routine duty of winter service that rarely appears in battle imagery. It came to the Library of Congress as a gift from J.P. Morgan in 1919.
