Troops drilling in the fields around Washington show the Union army learning its trade during the first years of the war. After the defeat at Bull Run in July 1861, the capital's defenses grew into a ring of forts, and volunteer regiments from the Northern states spent long weeks there practicing close-order drill, marching, and firing before they were sent to the front. Images like this one are part of the Brady-Handy collection, a body of Civil War photographs associated with Mathew Brady's studio and the photographer Levin Handy, later held by the Library of Congress. The print was made after the fighting, so it reflects the army as a training institution rather than as a battlefield force.
