Soldiers on horseback splash across a river beside the broken remains of a bridge, a scene of wartime damage that Alfred R. Waud, one of the most prolific battlefield artists of the Civil War, recorded in pencil on a small sheet of tan paper. Waud, born in England, drew for illustrated weeklies such as *Harper's Weekly*, sending sketches like this one to publishers, where engravers turned them into wood engravings for mass readers. The subjects, transportation and destruction, reflect how often bridges were among the first casualties of the fighting.
