Few photographs from the first months of the Civil War show the ordinary business of camp life as plainly as this view of the 5th Vermont Regiment at Camp Griffin, Virginia. The regiment was one of the many volunteer units raised in the North in 1861, drilled and quartered in Virginia while the Union army was still learning to become a fighting force. The print is a salted paper process image, an early method that gives a softer, warmer tone than later photographic papers. Its attribution to George Harper Houghton and its presence in an album kept by Larkin G. Mead connect it to the personal record-keeping of soldiers and photographers in the war's first year.
