Outdoor Catholic worship in a Union army camp is the subject here, with men of the 69th New York State Militia gathered for Sunday morning mass in 1861. The regiment was largely Irish-American and drawn from New York City. It answered the call for volunteers after Fort Sumter and was among the early state units sent to defend Washington. Photographs of camp life from the first year of the war are fairly scarce, and this one shows the religious routines that structured soldiers' weeks even as they prepared for combat. The print was made later from a glass copy negative, so its tones and sharpness reflect that later printing as well as the original exposure.
