Louis Prang's Boston firm issued this small chromolithograph as one of a set of album cards, each about the size of a visiting card, that showed Union soldiers going about their daily routines in camp. Prang was a German-born printer who became a leading American maker of color prints, and during the Civil War his firm produced sets like this one for a public hungry for images of the men at the front. Scenes of cooking, drilling, mail call and idle hours in tents gave families at home a familiar picture of life in the army, and the bright color work reflects the chromolithographic technique that Prang helped popularize in the United States.
