Part of a series of small chromolithographic album cards published by Louis Prang in Boston around 1864, this sheet is one of twelve scenes of Union soldiers in camp, with Zouave troops singled out in the subject headings. Prang's firm was known for color printing from stone that brought a painterly finish to inexpensive images, and the cards were meant to be pasted into albums or sent to friends. The little sheet shows how the war reached families at home through cheerful, carefully staged views of daily camp routine, which many viewers took as a window onto soldiers' lives.
