Drawn in pencil on July 8, 1863, this sketch map by E. Forbes was made while the artist was on the march toward Frederick, Maryland, five days after the fighting at Gettysburg ended. It is a quick field drawing rather than a finished survey, and it reflects the Union army's movements after the battle, as Lee's Confederate forces withdrew toward the Potomac River. Maps like this were often sketched to record positions, roads and terrain while the campaign was still unfolding. The Library of Congress holds it in its Civil War drawing collection, a gift from J.P. Morgan in 1919.
