Pencil drawings of Civil War battles like this one were often made by soldiers, correspondents, or observers who sketched on the spot, and this sheet is dated August 28, 1862, the day of the fighting at Gainesville, Virginia. That day, Stonewall Jackson's Confederate troops clashed with Union forces along the Warrenton Turnpike, part of the campaign that led to the Second Battle of Bull Run later that week. The artist is known only by the initials "E.F.," so the record does not say who drew it. The sheet came to the Library of Congress as a gift from J.P. Morgan in 1919 and belongs to a larger Civil War drawing collection.
