Baldface Hill and the ridge southeast of the Warrenton Turnpike anchor this drawing, which shows the advance of Gen. James Longstreet's right wing against Gen. Irvin McDowell's corps on August 30, 1862. That was the third day of the Second Battle of Bull Run, also called the Battle of Groveton. Longstreet's late-afternoon assault that day broke the Union line along the turnpike and drove federal troops back toward Henry House Hill. The drawing is part of the Library's Civil War drawing collection, which preserves how the fighting was recorded and understood in the decades after the war.
