A high, sweeping vantage point makes this 1856 panorama of New York stand out, showing the island's streets, rooftops and waterfront as one dense, busy city. The Federal Hall site on Wall Street is a fitting place to view it from. Washington took the presidential oath of office on this spot in 1789, in an earlier building that was later torn down. By 1856 the site held a customs house, so the view captures a major commercial district at the height of the port's growth.
