This bird's-eye lithograph shows Manhattan and Brooklyn side by side across the East River, as if seen from high above the water. Views like this were popular in the nineteenth century, when printers and city promoters used them to show off the rapid growth of the waterfront. The fort at the southern tip of Manhattan, later known as Castle Clinton and then Castle Garden, where many immigrants first arrived in the United States, sat at the edge of the harbor that such views were meant to capture.
